A private service and viewing was held for Clifford Edward "Skip" Baker, 82, of Anchorage, Alaska, on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026, from 1-5 p.m., at The Cremation Society of Alaska, officiated by Father Vince. His ashes will be inurned at Angelus Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
Skip passed peacefully in his sleep on Aug. 3, 2026, at Randel Assisted Living in Anchorage.
Skip Baker was born on Aug. 17, 1943, to Catherine Conning and Clifford Baker in New Brunswick, N.J. He graduated high school and joined the Navy. After his service he started a new journey that brought him to Alaska working on the pipeline. He married and had five children. He lived in many parts of Alaska including Nenana, Fairbanks and Nuiqsut. He left for a few years, living in New Mexico, before deciding that Alaska was home and settled in Barrow. He had several jobs, such as dishwasher, cook, cab driver, bus driver, driver's education instructor and early childhood caregiver. He worked for the NSB in Barrow for over 18 years while raising his kids. Although his first marriage ended in the '80s, he was able to find a new love while still in Barrow, and after he retired in 2000, he finally remarried on Nov. 13, 2011.
Skip loved to travel and take in the shows with his wife Aurora. They went to many places such as the Philippines, St. Lucia, St. Maria, Las Vegas and New Jersey, to name a few. He also loved to read and learn different things on the internet.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Catherine Conning and Clifford Baker; and two daughters, Catherine Baker and Deidre Baker.
He is survived by his loving wife, Aurora Feria Baker; three children, Christine Niwinski of Modesto, Calif., Eddie Baker of Anchorage, and Betty Kennedy (Kevin) of Atlanta, Texas; grandchildren, Neil Niwinski (Katelyn) of California, Anaiya Niwinski of California, Steele Baker of Barrow, Micheal Kennedy, Jonathan Kennedy and Vanessa Kennedy of Texas; one great-grandchild, Ellie-May Niwinski of California; sister-in-law, Laureta Gallardo (Wilfredo); and nephew, Justin Gallardo, both of California.
Skip will be remembered by Aurora as a very loving and thoughtful husband who never forgot flowers or a card for each and every holiday; by his kids, as a great dad who raised us with lots of laughs, love and good food.
