Oct 31, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bill at home in Eagle River, Alaska. The beloved principal, fisherman, gardener and friend left us on Oct. 31, 2024, at the age of 82.
Bill was born on April 12, 1942, in Everett, and was raised on a dairy farm in Snohomish, Wash. He met his wife, Diane, while attending college at the University of Idaho. They were married for 59 years.
In 1971, they moved their family to Eagle River. For 22 years, Bill served as the principal of Chugiak High School, where he touched countless lives with his dedication, guidance and unwavering commitment to his students, faculty and staff. Not only known for his tall stature, he was known for his integrity and strength of character as he helped shape multiple generations of young minds, leaving a legacy of education and community that will endure for years to come.
In addition to his career in education, Bill was a fisherman at heart. Every summer he and his family ventured to Egegik in Bristol Bay, where they operated a setnet site for 27 years. He shared his love of fishing with family and friends, creating memories that will be treasured forever.
When he wasn't at school or fishing in Egegik, Bill could be found in his garden with his hands in the soil cultivating beauty and life from the earth. His garden was a sanctuary filled with vibrant blooms and delicious vegetables. It reflected his love of nature and life's simple pleasures.
In addition to being a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Bill will also be remembered for his deep faith in the Lord, his warmth, his kindness, his generosity and the relationships he fostered with the many people he had the privilege of knowing. He leaves behind a legacy of love, learning and strength.
Bill is survived by his loving family, including his wife, Diane; their children, Erik, Nick, Kristi and Jennifer; and their families. He will be dearly missed by his friends, colleagues and the community that he served with such devotion.
There will be a private Memorial Service on Nov. 16, 2024, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Chugiak, Alaska, and a Celebration of Life on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2024, at 1 p.m., at Odd Man Rush Brewing in Eagle River. The public is welcome to attend the celebration and help us honor the memory of a remarkable man who lived fully, loved deeply and left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
